Benefits of Cloud Backup for SME’s

Benefits of Cloud Backup for SME’s

Recent studies have found that despite the rise of ‘The Cloud’ many small to medium businesses still backup their data using directly attached storage devices. As we all know these storage devices, such as USB sticks, can be lost, stolen or corrupted. So while they are convenient, they cannot deliver the same benefits and security to your business that a cloud backup service can.

In this article I’ll take a quick look at the benefits of online backup to business and why they should step away from physical backups and switch to the cloud.

Business grade online backup is a complete automated solution that encrypts then transfers data from your servers/computers to a specialised data centre that is designed to manage the end to end backup and restoration process. It enables efficient tracking of changes to your data, keeps prior versions of documents, compresses your data and handles automatic scheduling.

Maintaining your company’s critical data offsite is imperative for business continuity. With an offsite backup solution from a cloud provider your business benefits from:

  1. Anytime, Anywhere Access, Having your data backed up to the cloud allows for access from any location on any device.
  2. Your Data is Secured Offsite. In the event of something happening to your premises, flood/fire etc. your data is safe, secure and most importantly recoverable.
  3. Ease of use. BaaS (Backup as a Service) has made management and restoration easy. All it takes to restore a file or a full system is a few clicks.
  4. Automatic Scheduling. With cloud backup your files and automatically and continuously backed up.
  5. Business grade backup enables encryption of your data both in transit and at rest.

The benefit to any business is obvious, however, many are still hesitant to make the move. The main reason stated? Price. The reason for this is that most SME’s don’t have large IT budgets and still hold the belief that the cloud is an expensive endeavour. The reality though is quite the opposite. An average small business could expect to pay as little as €150 per year for a business grade backup service.

Disaster Recovery- Tried & Tested

Disaster Recovery - Tried & Tested

Disaster Recovery plans have been looked upon as something large organisations have and but rarely would an organisation actually test the readiness of the solution. Historically, a major problem has been that DR was seen as quite expensive and usually only affordable to large enterprise businesses. Since the advent of cloud, one technology that is building momentum and changing the landscape is Disaster Recovery as a Service (DRaaS). DRaaS is now a key word when speaking to businesses about cloud and no longer are the monthly service costs price prohibitive therefore more and more SME businesses are investing in this area.

Many organisations still have their traditional Disaster Recovery systems and infrastructure in place and believe they have their DR sorted and their Business Continuity Plan is in hand. However, the fundamental part of DR and Business Continuity lies in the testing, and of these companies, how many regularly test their DR systems and are they confident that their solution will work as planned and in a timely manner.

Having examined the market, it is clear that legacy Disaster Recovery infrastructure is not only costly and cumbersome, but in the event of a disaster, I wonder how many organisations would be in a position to get their systems up and running with limited impact on their business. Organisations need to identify some key points when it comes to DR readiness – how they lose the least amount of data, have the least amount of impact on the business, incur the least amount of cost, but recover as quickly as possible. More and more companies are identifying the speed of recovery as a major component when choosing a DR solution. ISO 27001 standards means that organisations need to prove their DR systems to demonstrate compliance.

As more businesses are turning to cloud, DRaaS offers organisations an alternative way to the traditional method of DR, which typically would mean a company uses legacy infrastructure to mirror their current data to a second site. By moving to DRaaS, the organisation no longer needs to maintain the legacy infrastructure, can run tests with ease and as often as required and be confident in the solution that when a disaster may happen the DR will work as planned.

Here are some key points, if you are thinking about moving your DR to DRaaS:

  • Recovery Point Objectives (RPO) and Recovery Time Objective (RTO) are two main points when evaluating a DR solution. RPO and RTO ensure you lose the least amount of data and your organisation recovers rapidly. Leading providers will be able to provide you with exceptional RPO and RTOs which will ensure your system is fully resilient with minimum impact to the organisation.
  • Cost is a main selling point for DRaaS, as the days of maintaining a second site with infrastructure are disappearing. Cloud enables companies to provision and use the infrastructure capacity as required and on demand. This now makes DRaaS affordable to the mid-market.
  • DRaaS allows potential customers to carry out trials before an initial purchase has been made. This means organisations no longer have to invest large sums of money into DR infrastructure before being able to test to ensure the proposed DR plan works.
  • The last, but arguably the most important point is the importance of DR testing. Regular DR testing will uncover anything that could go wrong in a real-life emergency and ensures confidence that your DR plan will work and failover is safe to initiate.

The Rise of DRaaS

The rise of DRaaS

DRaaS (Disaster Recovery as a Service) is fast becoming one of the most popular cloud options for business. The global DR market in 2015 was €1.2 Billion ($1.4 Billion) and is expected to rocket to €5.3 Billion by 2020. In fact, the advances made in Disaster Recovery over the last few years is believed by many to be the key reason for the rise in cloud adoption by businesses worldwide.

What does DRaaS have to offer your business? Well that depends on the chosen DR solution. The reason businesses choose DR as a Service is to ensure business continuity when the unimaginable happens. Just how quickly and efficiently this is accomplished in the event of a disaster is what separates the DR Solutions currently on the market.

If you’re in the market for a DR solution for your business we would recommend taking a closer look at Veeam or Zerto.
