A lot of people do not know the difference between Cloud Backup and Disaster Recovery. There are many similarities but there are some very important differences that could cost a business thousands in lost revenue if they were ignored. This article will explain the differences between the two backup solutions and how you can protect your business from disaster.

The Similarities

Both Cloud Backup and Disaster Recovery are data protection methods which store your data offsite and allow access of said data through the internet. They both often back up automatically and silently, requiring a minimum of effort on the client side, and they both generally work on a subscription model. The methods behind both technologies are broadly similar but the outcomes are very different.

The Differences

Cloud Backup works by copying every file from a client’s computer or server and storing it on an offsite server. This data can be recovered by transmitting the backed up data back to the client’s computer or server in the event of a data loss. If any client-side equipment has failed, it must be replaced before the restore can take place. Restores can be very slow, depending on the size of the backup and the speed of the client’s internet connection. On the low side this can be a few hours but can often take days with large server restores.

Disaster Recovery methods similarly work by copying every file from a client’s machine to an offsite server, but when it comes to recovering your files, you can be up and running within minutes. This is because Disaster Recovery packages store your files as a bootable image and then run that image from their servers as soon as recovery is needed. Workplace computers will work exactly as they did before the data loss, but will actually be reading their files straight from the offsite backup, across the internet. In the background, Disaster Recovery packages still restore your files to your servers, which will take the same amount of time as with Cloud Backup, but the important difference is the ability to use your computers and access your data whilst this is taking place.

Disaster Recovery plans have been looked upon as something large organisations have and but rarely would an organisation actually test the readiness of the solution. Historically, a major problem has been that DR was seen as quite expensive and usually only affordable to large enterprise businesses. Since the advent of cloud, one technology that is building momentum and changing the landscape is Disaster Recovery as a Service (DRaaS). DRaaS is now a key word when speaking to businesses about cloud and no longer are the monthly service costs price prohibitive therefore more and more SME businesses are investing in this area.

Many organisations still have their traditional Disaster Recovery systems and infrastructure in place and believe they have their DR sorted and their Business Continuity Plan is in hand.
