Installing Windows 10?

Tech Tuesday Installing Windows 10

TechTuesday – Installing Windows 10?

We’ve all become accustomed to that annoying popup in the bottom right of our screens that constantly asks you to upgrade to windows 10. But now that the free upgrade period has passed, that pop is either no longer working or has disappeared. So what do you do if you suddenly see a number of benefits to windows 10 and have decided to embrace it and everything that comes alone with it? Well, as the free upgrade period has passed, does that mean that if you want to upgrade you now have to pay for a full copy or a license? In short, no, you can still upgrade for free as long as you are running a fully activated copy of windows 7, 8 or 8.1.

Before you start you will need to acquire an offline version of windows 10 in the form of an iso. (At the time of writing this, you can still download a copy of Windows 10 from the Microsoft website).

Win10 Download Media Tool

The Microsoft Media Creation Tool will help you create a USB flash drive, DVD or ISO file. I recommend choosing ISO and using this to create a bootable DVD.

Once you have you copy of Windows 10 on disk, log into your current windows setup and run the DVD. Windows 10 will check your system to see if you’re using a legitimate copy of windows 7, 8 or 8.1 and once this is complete you should see the screen below asking for a windows 10 license key:

Windows 10 Setup

Below “Enter Product key” you will see an option “I’m reinstalling Windows 10 on this PC” (circled in red). Choose this option and follow the installation instructions. Once complete, you will have an activated Windows 10 install with a shiny new license key.

Sounds easy? Well for most users it is, but before you go ahead with your Win 10 install there are a few things you should consider.

Windows 7, 8 or 8.1 vs. 10

First and foremost, once you’ve clicked install, there is no way back. Also, is your computer 5 years old or older? If so, hand away from the mouse!  Unfortunately for you, it’s time for a bit of research. Before you can jump head first into the world of Windows 10 you need to check with your PC manufacturer to see if all the drivers you require have windows 10 versions. Despite what you may think,  Windows 7 or 8 versions of your drivers may not work on windows 10. In fact, you may have problems with everything from USB Bluetooth & WiFi dongles to Sound & Video cards.

Bricked Printer on Windows 10

Some printers can become about as functional as a brick.

Do you have a printer? Is it older than 2 years of age? While you may consider it a trooper that’s a long way from being sent to live on a farm, it could well become a casualty of a Win 10 upgrade. We’ve seen varied results from such printers, some work just fine, some work but without the same functionality, and unfortunately, some end up about as functional as a brick when used on Windows 10.

The Verdict? To Install windows 10 or not?

So, the verdict?

Well it depends, we’ve tried this with a number of PCs in our office to mixed results. Although windows allowed us to upgrade from windows 7 to windows 10 it did not always function correctly once installed. In one case this was due to resources (despite meeting Win10 system requirements), in another, it wouldn’t accept the windows 7 drivers and the manufacturer of the computer hadn’t provided windows 10 versions so we were stuck with a gritty version of the new OS. These incidents occurred on systems that were 5 or more years old. On the other hand, when installing on a more modern system, barely 3 years old at best, the install went perfectly fine.

So before you decide to take the jump, we really recommend that you do your research or it could end up costing you more than a license key.

Step 3:  Under “What to Back up” select local and select the local folder you would like you backups saved too. The schedule for this can be different to your cloud backup. If you don’t have a cloud backup setup already, and require one, simply turn ‘Replicate Backups’ to On. Apply this to enable the plan.

How do I seed a backup?

This is a continuation of our previous posts:

The question we are tackling today in detail is “How do I seed a backup?”

If you have a poor broadband connection or a very slow upload speed you may think online backup is out of the question for your business. This is not true, Sleepless gold platform allows customers to perform a seed, this is where an initial backup is to an external hard disk is performed. Once complete this disk is shipped to Sleepless and used as the initial backup, all backups after this are incremental, meaning only the changes from the initial seed are backed up.

To do this please login to your account by going to https://cloud.acronis.com/login

Step 1: Once logged in click on the green ‘Manage Backups’ button above your plan:

pic1

Step 2: If you do not already have a backup plan setup, you will need to recreate one. Once you’ve done this click ‘Backup’:

Seeding a Backup

Step 3: Click the cog at the top right hand corner of the menu that appears:

Step 4: Choose ‘Initial Seeding’ from the left menu and select ‘Yes’ to use initial seeding:

Step 6: Click on Apply and you will be able to run the backup. Once this completes your backup will be located on your external hard and this can be sent back to Sleepless.

Gold Backup Part 5: Troubleshooting a failed backup

Gold Backup Part 5

Troubleshooting a failed backup

This is a continuation of our previous posts: ‘Installing Sleepless Gold Backup powered by Acronis‘,  ‘Gold Backup – Part 2 – Setting up a backup plan‘, ‘Part 3: How does encryption work?‘ & ‘Part 4: Backup Restoration‘.

The questions we are tacking today in detail is “My backup failed what do I do next?”

From time to time you may come across an error when running a backup, if this happens we recommend you follow the following troubleshooting tips.

Tip 1 – Upgrade the agent

Upgrading your agent is the most important task you can do within Acronis. They have made this task automated in resent updates however it is something you should check either way especially if you a using a windows server 2003 or older.

i. To do this you will need to login to your account by going to https://cloud.acronis.com

ii. Click on Manage Backups:

manage backups

iii. Click on settings and click on your backup and click Update agent:

Click on settings and click on your backup and click Update agent

iv. The update will download to your local computer and update automatically, you will get a notification from the backup monitor in your task bar.

Pic3

Tip 2 – Check the file location

It is easy to create a backup plan and forget about it until it starts causing issue. One of the most common issues we see in Sleepless is that the folder/file which is backing up does not exist or has been renamed. You can edit your plan at any stage to update a location please see a previous tutorial called “How do I setup a backup plan?”

Tip 3 – Is my agent is online?

If you login to your backup and see the following, it means the agent on your local computer is offline:

backup agent on your local computer is offline

To check to see if the services are online go to Windows control panel -> Administrative Tools -> Services.

Acronis has 3 services:

  1. Acronis Managed Machine Service
  2. Acronis Remote Agent Service
  3. Acronis Scheduler2 Service

All 3 need a status of Started. Right click on each of the three services and click start. If they cant be started try restarting your computer. If this doesn’t work try reinstalling the agent or updating it.

Finally

If all else fails or if you’re not sure about any of these steps please open a ticket with the Sleepless Helpdesk.
