How to Protect Your Business From WannaCry

WannaCry (also known as WannaCrypt0r) is a new ransomware attack which started affecting computers last week. It gains access through a backdoor built into older versions of Windows and then encrypts the host hard drive. To unencrypt the files, the victim must send money to the hackers. So far WannaCry has affected thousands of computers and servers, across hundreds of organisations, including the NHS, Telefónica, Nissan and some Irish hospitals, causing untold havoc among those affected.

How to Protect Yourself

WannaCry is unlike other ransomware attacks as it does not spread through infected email links or files, but instead installs automatically, without user input. This means that users must be proactive in protecting themselves from the attack. Users should make sure that their computers are fully updated, and any users running Windows 8 or below should download and install the patch released by Microsoft here.

To protect yourself from future malware attacks you should never open links or files from people you don’t know or trust. Malware is often spread through infected Word or PDF documents, so do not assume any file is safe if it is from an unknown source.

For a comprehensive anti-malware solution, users should consider Webroot Security and Sleepless Cloud Backup to stop threats from gaining access to your systems and to keep your files safe, away from the risk of infection.

Disaster Recovery vs. Cloud Backup: How to Decide

Disaster Recovery

A lot of people do not know the difference between Cloud Backup and Disaster Recovery. There are many similarities but there are some very important differences that could cost a business thousands in lost revenue if they were ignored. This article will explain the differences between the two backup solutions and how you can protect your business from disaster.

The Similarities

Both Cloud Backup and Disaster Recovery are data protection methods which store your data offsite and allow access of said data through the internet. They both often back up automatically and silently, requiring a minimum of effort on the client side, and they both generally work on a subscription model. The methods behind both technologies are broadly similar but the outcomes are very different.

The Differences

Cloud Backup works by copying every file from a client’s computer or server and storing it on an offsite server. This data can be recovered by transmitting the backed up data back to the client’s computer or server in the event of a data loss. If any client-side equipment has failed, it must be replaced before the restore can take place. Restores can be very slow, depending on the size of the backup and the speed of the client’s internet connection. On the low side this can be a few hours but can often take days with large server restores.

Disaster Recovery methods similarly work by copying every file from a client’s machine to an offsite server, but when it comes to recovering your files, you can be up and running within minutes. This is because Disaster Recovery packages store your files as a bootable image and then run that image from their servers as soon as recovery is needed. Workplace computers will work exactly as they did before the data loss, but will actually be reading their files straight from the offsite backup, across the internet. In the background, Disaster Recovery packages still restore your files to your servers, which will take the same amount of time as with Cloud Backup, but the important difference is the ability to use your computers and access your data whilst this is taking place.

Who is Disaster Recovery for?

Disaster Recovery is essential for any business who can’t afford downtime or data loss. For example, if an insurance company’s server malfunctions, they could be liable for all of the claims they could not pay out and would lose all the business coming to them whilst the server is down.

Veeam Free Cloud Promotion

Veeam Prom

We are very excited to announce that we are taking part in Veeam’s Free Cloud Connect Services program. Read on to learn more about the ins and outs of the program and how you can claim your free cloud services.

What is the Veeam Free Cloud Connect Services Program?

Sleepless are partnering with Veeam to provide €750 of free cloud services to all eligible Veeam customers. This means that customers can try out Veeam’s Cloud Connect services for an extended period of time, at no cost to themselves.

Who’s eligible?

All Veeam Availability Suite, Veeam Backup & Replication or Veeam Backup Essentials customers with active Veeam  maintenance contracts. If you’re unsure of your eligibility, please call us on 091 511 444.

What are the benefits of backing up to the cloud?

Sleepless cloud backup is much more secure than onsite backup as your data is located away from your business in a secure datacentre in Ireland. This means that your data is safe from office accidents, degradation and doesn’t require consumer-side maintenance.

Backing up to the cloud allows businesses to more easily adhere to the ‘3-2-1’ rule of backup. The rule goes that you should have 3 copies of your data, on 2 types of media with 1 located off-site. Veeam have created a useful graphic for this:

The 3-2-1 rule ensures that your data is safe even when disaster strikes, and Veeam Cloud Connect makes it even easier to secure your data offsite.
