Sleepless – March FAQ

March FAQ

Every month we publish a list of the most frequently asked questions from the previous month. So here’s our FAQ from March.

What is PBX hacking?

This is when your telephone systems is accessed by unauthorised individuals that rack up thousands of euro in charges by running calls through your lines. They usually gain access through weakly secured voicemail inboxes, maintenance ports or unsecured networks.

How do I protect my telephone system?

The best way to prevent your system from getting hacked is to;

  1. Make sure your employees are not using obvious pins on their voicemail, 0000, 1234 etc….
  2. We would recommend placing a bar on all international & premium calls outside of regular business hours.
  3. Make sure your systems has the latest software & patches installed. Along with increased security, the latest software versions also offer 6 digit pins for voicemail.
  4. Get in contact with your line provider to ensure there has been no unauthorised activity on your bill.

What is an Edge Gateway?

An Edge Gateway acts as a virtual router for your VDC networks.  Much like a physical router, they can be configured for network services like DCHP, VPN, Firewall etc.

What is DCHP?

Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DCHP) is a network protocol that allows Dynamic IP Addresses to be automatically assigned to any device connected to a network.  It is used to simplify network administration by keeping track of IP addresses and making it unnecessary for administrator to manually add an IP address every time a device is connected to the network.

What is the difference between Disaster Recovery and Online Backup?

Simply put, online backup is used to secure files and systems that can be restored in the event of data loss or corruption. Disaster recovery allows the replication of entire systems, and in the event of a disaster, these replications can go live keeping your businesses running and preventing downtime.

Ransomeware updateRansomware Update

Adobe Systems makers of the widely used flash software for internet browsers with over 1 billion users has issued an emergency update on Thursday to patch newly discovered security flaw . The new security update is for OS X, Windows, Linux and Chrome OS. This update has been issued to resolve “critical vulnerabilities that could potentially allow an attacker to take control of the affected system” in other words Ransomware.

The topic of Ransomware is something we have highlighted a few times in the past couple of months. For those who missed those posts: Ransomware and what you need to know.

Ransomware is effectively a virus, usually delivered through an email attachment that infects a computer or network and allows hackers to hold your company data hostage. Recent attacks have seen hackers demanding sums of more than €20,000 and threating to delete all business data if they don’t receive it. Read: Ransomware and what you need to know.

To protect against these type of attacks Sleepless recommends installing an up-to-date security software such as Webroot.

Webroot is the world’s smallest and fastest endpoint security client, a smarter way to solve malware prevention and endpoint security performance and management issues. Read more on Webroot.
