DDoS Cloud Mitigation

Distributed Denial of Service Protection

Many of you will be aware of the increase in Distributed Denial of Service “DDoS” attacks in 2015, and that these attacks are expected to become more frequent in 2016.  You may have come across the news articles discussing these attacks on major businesses and institutions that rendered their websites inaccessible to their clients and customers. At Sleepless we get asked quite frequently about DDoS Mitigation by our customers so we decided to put up this post to provide more information.

First off, what is DDoS?

A Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack is when your website is overwhelmed by too many online requests at once, this can render your website inaccessible. They are generally carried out by malicious individuals/organisations using multiple compromised systems to flood a target system. These attacks are becoming a lot more common, which sites such as bbc.com, cso.ie & lottery.ie being hit within the past few months.

Who is at risk from DDoS attacks?

While in the past DDoS attacks were mostly focused on large media outlets, multi-national financial institutes & government bodies, of late these attacks have also been targeting education bodies, forums, hosting providers & retail websites. In fact it seems that they are now occurring randomly with no apparent reasoning behind them and targeting companies from all industries.

What is the purpose behind a DDoS attack?

There are many reason that people will carry out DDoS attacks, they range from random vandalism to political activism. Increasingly however, these attacks are used as a means to earn money through extortion. Basically the attackers will hold your company to ransom, demanding payment in order to cease the attack.

What can you do to protect your business from a DDoS attack?

The most effective method you can employ to protect your business from a DDoS attacks is Cloud Mitigation.

Using a DDoS protection service provider such as Sleepless gives you access to a global network with massive amounts of bandwidth & mitigation capacity which is used to scrub your incoming traffic so that only “clean” traffic can get through in the event of an attack.

What type of Business’s may require protection?

As DDoS attacks can affect at any business type, our solution is aimed at all markets. Here are a few industries our service is focused on:

  • Online Retail
  • Financial Institutions
  • Hospitality
  • Government Institutions
  • Data centres
  • Non-profit organisations

How much does DDoS Cloud Mitigation cost?

With Sleepless DDoS you select your plan based how much clean traffic you wish to able to receive in the event of a DDoS attack. This means that no matter the size of an attack, the amount of clean traffic you receive will be related directly to the DDoS plan you have chosen.
